Arcades of different widths and heights created a visually recognizable structure, while, in accordance with the recommendations, the chimney was used as an elevator core.

A competition was recently held in Arandjelovac for the creation of a conceptual solution for the appearance of the Annex of the Special Rehabilitation Hospital “Bukovička banja”, in which the local design and construction bureau Plan won the first place.

Presenting their award-winning project, the Arandjelovac architects immediately point out that the existing building of the Special Hospital is recognizable by the arcades on the eastern facade, and the motif of the arcades was also used in the design of the Po+P+2 storey annex in order to create a visually legible unit with the existing building.

Continuity of architectural heritage

Arcades are formed on the south and east facades, facing the park, and extend through two floors, forming a porch on the ground floor and balconies on the first and second floors.

“By repeating the motif of the arcade, the continuity of the architectural heritage of Bukovička Banja Park was achieved,” concludes the Plan bureau.

At the same time, they add, with the irregular layout and arcades of different widths and heights, with a ventilated stone facade, a new, authentic structure is clearly visible, visually pleasing and recognizable.

The staircase core is placed in a glass cube on the facade, so that the chimney can be seen both on the facade and in the interior.

The conditions of the competition and the above-mentioned documents define that a Special Hospital Dependance will be built on the premises of the current boiler house, with the obligation to do a total reconstruction of the chimney of the boiler house, which is a landmark.

In accordance with the recommendations, the chimney was used as an elevator core. A three-legged main staircase connecting all floors is formed around the chimney.

“The construction of the staircase is steel, and the treads are made of tempered glass, so as not to threaten the chimney either structurally or visually,” the authors tell Gradnja.

Hyperbaric chamber and kitchen in the basement

There are two units in the basement – a part for a hyperbaric chamber with a waiting room, an oxygen tank and an intervention office, and a part for a kitchen area with warehouses.

A technical room was also designed to accommodate installations, a laundry warehouse, food and beverage warehouses, a cloakroom for waiters and a kitchen, which is connected by an elevator to the restaurant on the ground floor and the cafe on the roof terrace.

The main entrance to the building is on the east side. The facility is accessed from the park area between the Dependence and the Special Hospital via the porch.

From the entrance hall, where the reception is located, you can access the restaurant, the hyperbaric chamber in the basement or the rooms on the upper floors. The restaurant has an attached porch and the glass facade can be opened in the summer months.

The walkway is designed from multi-chamber thermal insulating glass, with the possibility of opening in the summer months.

On the north side there is an economic entrance, from where a staircase and an elevator lead to the kitchen and warehouses in the basement.

On the northeast side, there is an overhead hot connection with the Special Hospital. The walkway is designed from multi-chamber thermal insulating glass, with the possibility of opening in the summer months.

An annex in the form of a windbreak, also made of multi-chamber thermal insulation glass, is planned next to the hydrotherapy block D of the Closed Bath facility, so as not to visually endanger the existing facility.

Solar panels on the roof

18 hotel-type rooms and two apartments were designed on the first floor. The rooms facing the park have balconies, while the rooms facing the street, on the west side, have French balconies.

The room closest to the staircase on both floors is adapted to the needs of people with disabilities. The total projected number of beds is 80.

A flat roof was designed, in accordance with the conditions of the competition. The southern part of the roof is designed as a walk-through roof terrace, in the function of an open terrace of a restaurant and pastry shop.

Part of the flat roof is designed as impassable and solar panels are planned to be installed on that surface.

On the floors, large glass surfaces made of multi-chamber thermal insulating glass are provided to provide guests with a view of the park and to give the facade a modern look.

According to the authors, the facade is in accordance with the conditions of the competition – modern and made of durable materials. A ventilated stone facade is planned for the arcades.

Given that Arandjelovac and Bukovička banja are known for the “Marble and Sounds” event and that there are sculptures made of white wedding stone in the park, white stone was chosen.

The cornices on the floors are also made of stone. On the ground floor, in the entrance hall and the restaurant, a glass facade made of multi-chamber thermal insulation glass is provided.

Aesthetic value and energy efficiency

A ventilated facade is also provided on the floors, and the cladding is brick. Brick was used because of the visual harmony of the building with the reconstructed chimney.

These three materials used on the facade were chosen for their durability, aesthetic values and energy efficiency, Arandjelovac architects point out.

Thermal insulating glass is provided – thermal pane of 3 layers of 4 mm glass, which are hermetically sealed and the space between them is filled with argon. In this way, greater energy and sound efficiency is obtained, the authors tell our portal.

The project preserved the existing trees and planned to plant new ones.

As far as the ground floor solution of the building is concerned, the existing arc-shaped paths were kept and new paths were added, and in front of the arcades, water surfaces were planned in which the arcades are reflected.

On the islands obtained between the tracks, low-growing plants were planted around the perimeter. The islands are filled with ornamental plants, flowers and gravel, in keeping with the rest of the park.

What is important to note is the fact that according to the project, existing trees are preserved and new ones are planned to be planted.

The installation of two types of benches for sitting is planned, as well as decorative lighting – columns with LED lighting, built-in linear lighting along the water surfaces and LED lighting integrated into the benches.
